WHAT IS THE BUDDY PROGRAM?
It’s about inspiration… the Buddy Program strengthens our community by guiding and inspiring youth through mentoring. Mentoring improves children’s self-esteem and self-confidence and helps them realize their potential, whether it is one-on-one with their Big Buddy or through our group mentoring programs based on experiential models. By running or walking on July 4th, you will be supporting local youth. Encourage your family and friends to join you! For more information on how to participate in the Buddy Program as a Big Buddy, program counselor, event volunteer or donor, please call (970) 920-2130. We are a local 501(c)3 charitable organization.

Boogie’s Diner is the proud title sponsor of this annual race benefitting young people from Aspen to Rifle through mentoring and experiential programming. As Chairman of the Buddy Program’s Board of Directors and host of Boogie’s Bash for the Buddies, Lenny ‘Boogie’ Weinglass has taken a leading role in the growth and long term sustainability of the Buddy Program. Boogie’s generosity doesn’t stop there. He is a generous donor to innumerable organizations and individuals throughout the Roaring Fork Valley.
RACE TIMING AND RESULTS
Preliminary results will be posted promptly following the finish at Boogie’s Diner. Breakdowns will include overall finish order and age group finish order. The age group finish results will also be published in the July 5th edition of the Aspen Times and online at our website www.buddyprogram.org.
For the 5-Mile Race, there will be one start for ALL runners at 8:00 A.M. At the start line, corrals and signage will be clearly marked for different paces. The area immediately behind the start line will be reserved for wheelchairs, then those runners whose pace is 7 minutes and under. Proceeding away from the start line will be signs marked 8 minutes and under, 9 minutes and under, 10 minutes and under and all other runners. As a courtesy to other runners, please line up according to your ability.
The 5-Mile Race (see map below) has been USA Track and Field certified (CO10021DCR). Beginning at Boogie’s Diner, the course winds through the Aspen city core, down the Rio Grande Trail and parallel to the Roaring Fork River, then heads up Heart Attack Hill (ouch!) on Cemetery Lane. The course crosses over the Marolt Bridge and back into town on Hopkins Street. A final sprint brings you to the finish at Boogie’s Diner. It is a challenging course with some uphill between mile markers 2 and 4, so save something for the finish. There will be water stations on Sierra Vista and Hopkins Streets.
1-MILE FAMILY AND CANINE WALK
Our race is going to the dogs! Bring your favorite four-legged pal (on a leash please) to join in the fun with walkers and families for a pleasant 1-Mile Family Walk (see map below). The walk will begin at 9:00 A.M. The more the merrier; it’s all for a terrific charity! Registered walkers get a T-shirt, race bib, and a chance at lots of drawing prizes. Registered dogs will get their own special Buddy Bandanna. This event has become a tradition and is a wonderful way to begin the Fourth of July celebration -- among family and friends while supporting local children. If you sign up for the 5-Mile Race, you are eligible for the Family Walk. Canine participants must be registered separately.
THE CITY OF ASPEN’S ZGREEN REQUIREMENTS
The Buddy Program is committed to upholding the City of Aspen’s ZGreen requirements -- we seek to minimize water and energy consumption as well as waste production. We ask that all participants please travel to and from the race by foot, bike, bus or car-pool. The Buddy Program will provide water coolers and recyclable cups, but not bottled water. PLEASE USE THE RECYCLING BINS FOR THE PLASTIC CUPS WE PROVIDE. Better yet, bring your own bottles to fill at Green water stations. Any race registration forms printed use 100% post-consumer recycled paper.
No dogs allowed in the 5-Mile Race. No headsets. Bib numbers must be visible on the front of the runner. Runners with bibs not visible on the front will be immediately disqualified. Strollers are asked to line up behind the pace signs or in the 1-Mile Family Walk. Adults wearing bib numbers must accompany strollers. Strollers will not be issued bib numbers. An 80-minute time limit has been placed on the 5-Mile Race, after which participants will be asked to move to the sidewalk.
PLEASE RETURN YOUR TIMING CHIP AFTER YOU CROSS THE FINISH LINE
